The second year of M&L started by a transnational meeting

The third transnational meeting happened in Warsaw on the 28 and 29th of september.

The second year of the project just started. These two days of meeting was the occasion to talk about how to evaluate skills of our students, to start to work about the guide « How to build a M&L workshop ».

Also, thanks to our partner of Żmichowska high school (Warsaw), we could discover the school, the city, and the Warsaw Uprising Museum.

This meeting was the occasion to discover the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics of the University of Warsaw.

A second transnational meeting to end the first school-year!

25 teachers representing the 10 partner schools (+ 2 invited ones) and the MATh.en.JEANS association gathered on the 31st of May and 1st of June in the Colegiul Naţional Iași (Romania). This second transnational meeting ended the first school-year of Maths&Languages and was the opportunity to review all the activities of the project in 2017-2018.

In short, the physical meetings between twinned teams (LTTAs*) were very much appreciated by students, teachers and researcher as well as joint participations to congresses (in France or in Padova, Italy).  There is more work to be done to harmonise maths research and communication practices and to fix technical issues but everything is running well!

The atmosphere was good and the group looks forward to meeting again in Warsaw for the 3rd transnational meeting (27th-28th of September)!

PS: It should be noted that the M&L partners were pleased to welcome two new schools that are using the M&L approach: Lycée Bellevue (Alès, France) and Colegiul Naţional Mihail Eminescu (Satu Mare, Romania)!

The first M&L year is ending… what did pupils think about it?

What a fantastic start for our project! More than 200 students participated and around 80 of them traveled to meet their twinned research partners during a week. What did they think of their experience? Lets find out here.

For me M&L is one of the greatest things I have ever done. I was delighted by the idea of being involved in such a wonderful project. I loved meeting teenagers from another country and changing impressions with them. The problems were a veritable challenge for us however with the help received from our mentors, we managed to find the solutions. Being a host was a pleasure and I am looking forward to seeing everyone soon! MATh.en.JEANS est une merveille! Stefan Voicila, Colegiul National ”Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu”

I had a good time during this year with maths en jean. Indeed, it was the second time I participated to the maths project but I was still excited by meeting new people and traveling to Romania.
First, the travel in Romania was wonderful and I met very nice people, I was so happy to see again my penfriend Miruna, and I was also glad to welcome Radu in my house. Then, we went to a congress in Montpellier and it was nice, I had fun with my friends and I had a good time with Radu, it was a very good experience. The congress was fine, I learnt many things and I met people that I’ll never forget. About maths en jean working group, i was a bit scared at the begining because there were a lot people and I didn’t want to lose the feeling that we had last year because we were not many people but actually I m very happy to be friend with girls and boys from maths en jean. And I don’t have to forget that I joined maths en jean because i love mathematic and I think I’ll go back next year to work (and work harder) about a maths subject (by the way, the subject was deeply interesting). Inès Canal, Lycée Aragao, Perpignan.

This was my third year in the math research workshop and, as every year, I gained a lot of experience, I learned new things and I made a lot of new friends. The research topic was very interesting, even if it wasn’t the one that I first wanted to study, but in the end, we succeeded in finding its solution. In the beginning, we didn’t have so many ideas about the way in which we were going to solve it, but in time we managed to find the solution using our mathematical knowledge and comparing our work with the French students’ work. The Padova Congress was a very pleasant experience for me; I saw a different way in which mathematics can be studied, I met new people and we had a good time. It was very encouraging for me and it was a unique opportunity to present my work in front of a large public. All in all, being part of the M&L project gives us the opportunity to study mathematics in a new way using all our knowledge. Besides this, we have the chance to use information from other subjects and to improve our linguistic skills, but also to establish new friendships with people who want to study the same things with you and have the same interests. Stinian Georgia, Colegiul Naţional Emil Racoviţă, Cluj-Napoca.

Within the Eramsus MATh.en.JEANS project, we had the great opportunity to work on a research theme with students abroad, to take part in an international mathematical congress and to get to know the rich culture of developed countries such as Belgium and France.
The project has an excellent formative purpose for students, and this way they practice not only mathematical abilities, but aslo communication, socialization, or teamwork skills.
As a result of this mobility, I learned to focus on a mathematical theme and to work in a team formed by both our school students and foreign students. It is also a unique way to get to know the culture and tradition of another country, and an important role in this was played by the family of Belgians who hosted me in the most welcoming way possible. I had the chance to experience their lifestyle on my own and have perfected my communication and socialization skills.
The experience of an Erasmus program is something unique and I recommend it to everyone who is given this opportunity.
Ilinca, Colegiul Naţional Iași.

Students presentations in Lycée Arago (Perpignan, France)

M&L students from Lycée Arago presented the project, their workshop, international twinning and mathematical research to the other pupils and teachers of their school in the afternoon of the Friday, 25th of May (you can download the programme at the end of the article).

More than a dissemination activity, surely the best way to recruit students for next year!

Lycée d’Altitude and CN Emil Racoviţă students participated in the Math Research Forum (Cluj-Napoca, 18th of May)

Students from Lycée d’Altitude (Briançon, France) and Colegiul Naţional Emil Racoviţă (Cluj-Napoca, Romania) presented jointly their research activities during the Math Research Forum of Cluj-Napoca on the 18th of May. They were meeting for the third time this year, setting a nice collaboration example to the others M&L workshops to follow.

During this 3-days meeting, students from this twinning had the opportunity to go further in their research collaboration particularly writing together their publications.

Finally, the Briançon delegation was given a guided tour of the very nice city of Cluj-Napoca in English language. This M&L project is definitively much more than doing only Mathematics in a foreign language!

Arago students participated in the « Festijeune » day in Montpellier

The Argago M&L workshop participated in the « Festijeune » day, organized by the Occitanie Pyrénées Méditerranée Region and held on the 17th of May in the Montpellier Exhibition hall. These students are definitively first-class ambassadors for our project!

13 M&L pupils of this workshop had the opportunity there to present the M&L project, accompanied by  their teacher Marie Diumenge and 37 supporters from their school. They first introduced the project via a 10 minutes oral presentation in the international openness area and then participated to a debate on the interests of such an international experience and the issues that must be faced to make it successful. They discussed there with young people that spent between 2 weeks and 5 months in Barcelone, Cameroon and Chile.

The afternoon was dedicated to the discover of many projects funded by the Region in several areas: sport, culture, music, mémory etc. and then enjoyed a musical entirely built by 300 students and their teachers, a urban dance show and a rap concert.

The M&L project presented during the 3rd Scientix conference 4-6 May 2018

Ariana Vacaretu, teacher at the Colegiul Naţional Emil Racoviţă (Cluj-Napoca), had the opportunity to present the Maths&Languages project during the 3rd Scientix conference 4-6 May 2018 in Brussels. More than 350 teachers, policymakers, researchers and project managers attended her talk. No doubt that it caught their eyes!

Thank you Ariana for this great dissemination work!

Iași M&L pupils participated in the MATh.en.JEANS congress in Chișinău (Moldova)

The last MATh.en.JEANS congress was held in Chișinău (Moldova) on the 12th of May in the library of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences.

This event gathered 70 participants: students, teachers and researchers of 8 workshops from Chişinău (2 teams), Hîncești and Ungheni (Moldavie) and from the nearby Romanian city of Iași (2 teams from Colegiul Naţional and 1 team from Colegiul Naţional „Costache Negruzzi”).

The two teams from Colegiul Naţional (Iaşi) that presented their research work via conferences and posters, like all the other students involved, are part of the M&L project. A great showcase for us!
